Jacob Gunnell is a PhD student studying Electrical Engineering at UMD. He joined the PhoQuS group in June 2026.
Jacob is fascinated by the structure and elegance of photonics, electromagnetics, and quantum mechanics, and so has been drawn to research with PhoQuS. Currently, he works on optimizing and extending Genqo.jl, a Julia library for modelling entangled photon sources to be used in the realization of a quantum internet. In the future, he is interested in researching quantum memories, entanglement distillation, or similar research problems in quantum computing.
When he’s not in the lab writing code, Jacob enjoys playing double bass in the symphony, listening to and composing classical music, thinking about philosophy, going to the gym, and cooking.
